What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

Cataracts are hazy areas within the natural lens of the eye that can reduce the quality of your vision. When these vision changes reach a level that interferes with your daily activities, cataract surgery is often recommended. During cataract surgery, the clouded natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) implant.

Similar to glasses lenses, IOLs are available in different powers to focus light. Many patients undergoing cataract surgery choose IOLs that reduce their need for glasses after surgery. Previous lens technologies contain a fixed power that is determined using measurements prior to surgery. Due to variations in eye anatomy and healing patterns, it can be challenging to select the best lens power using these preoperative measurements. This can result in a final glasses prescription that is larger than desired for some patients. With fixed-power lenses, the lens power cannot be changed unless additional surgery is performed.

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only lens technology that can be adjusted after surgery. After the eye has healed, a series of UV light treatments are applied to the IOL to reshape the lens and adjust its power. These light treatments are simple, painless, and take around 90 seconds. Using these postoperative adjustments, the IOL power can be customized and fine-tuned to provide extremely precise outcomes.  The LAL also allows the opportunity to test drive a specific outcome before it is finalized. When the desired outcome is achieved, lock-in treatments are performed to make the lens power permanent.

With the Light Adjustable Lens, you can enjoy unmatched visual clarity during all your favorite activities without relying on glasses or contacts. You’ll also enjoy the benefit of knowing your sight is truly customized to match your unique vision needs.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens Plus?

The Light Adjustable Lens Plus (LAL+) offers the same visual customization as the original Light Adjustable Lens while providing a more extended depth of focus. It uses a modified surface curvature to create a slight increase in central lens power and bring you quality vision at a wider range of distances.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Most cataract surgery patients are great candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens. You may be a good candidate if you want to achieve fully customized vision with a precise outcome after cataract surgery.

You will also need to meet certain requirements, including:

At your cataract surgery consultation, your eye doctor will discuss these factors with you, along with your lifestyle and vision goals, to help you decide whether the Light Adjustable Lens is right for you.

What are the Benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens?

Choosing the Light Adjustable Lens provides the opportunity to change your life in many ways. Some of the benefits of this premium IOL include:

Crisp, Clear Vision

If you want to enjoy all of life’s great moments in high definition, the Light Adjustable Lens could be the right IOL for you. Enhance every second of movie nights with your loved ones, relaxing days at the park, and watching vibrant sunsets with crystal-clear vision.

Studies have shown that patients who chose the Light Adjustable Lens were nearly twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision or better without the need for glasses than patients who chose standard monofocal IOLs.

Peace of Mind

Although it’s natural to be nervous about your vision results after cataract surgery, with the Light Adjustable Lens, you don’t have to be. It can give you peace of mind, as your vision can be adjusted to fit your goals after the procedure.

This gives you more control over the vision results of cataract surgery and ensures you can see clearly to do what you love.

Personalized Vision

After cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens, your eye doctor will have you attend a series of follow-up treatments to adjust and lock in your vision. They will use the Light Delivery Device to adjust your lens to match your desired prescription precisely.

This level of customization is unique to the Light Adjustable Lens, meaning you’ll have the opportunity to achieve more personalized vision than with any other IOL.

Built-In UV Protection

An excellent feature of the Light Adjustable Lens is its ActivShield technology. This can help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Great for Patients with Mild to Moderate Astigmatism

During postoperative adjustment sessions, precise astigmatism correction is possible with the Light Adjustable Lens. This results in clearer, crisper vision to do the things you love.

What is Recovery Like with the Light Adjustable Lens?

After the Light Adjustable Lens has been placed during cataract surgery, your cataract surgeon will send you home with special UV protective glasses. You will need to wear these at all times while you heal to protect your eyes from UV light. You should only take them off to shower, sleep, wash your face, or apply eye drops.

To adjust your vision, you will need to attend one to three UV light treatment sessions with your eye doctor, followed by two “lock-in” treatments. During these sessions, your doctor will discuss possible options for IOL adjustment to help reach your vision goals. They will then use the Light Delivery Device in 90-second increments to adjust the shape of your lens to match your desired prescription.

The treatments themselves are quick, non-invasive, and completely painless. They will be scheduled around two to three weeks after your cataract surgery and be spaced around three days apart.

What Will My Vision Be Like with the Light Adjustable Lens?

Once your vision has been locked-in, you can start living every moment with stunning visual clarity. The Light Adjustable Lens can greatly reduce or even eliminate your reliance on glasses and contact lenses.

With the Light Adjustable Lens, you can see your family, friends, and pets with enhanced visual clarity and live fully in the moment, whether you’re baking cookies with your grandchildren, playing a game of pickleball, or relaxing in bed with a good book. Don’t you think it’s time you gave yourself the gift of clear vision?
